The Electric Spark, The Long Wait, and The Love That Stayed

Part 12: The Electric Spark, The Long Wait, and The Love That Stayed

After that morning in the cafeteria, my heart never felt the same. Going to work every single morning became exciting and terrifying all at once. I was nervous, my hands would shake, and every second I wondered when I would catch his eyes again.

The next Saturday, we both had our day off. It was a scorching hot day when he invited me out. We went to the Hilton Hotel me with my close friend, and him with his. We laughed and had such a wonderful afternoon, but when night fell, he expected that I would go home with him. I smiled and said no. I chose to go back to my own place with my friend. He was so surprised that I didn't go, but I wanted to protect my heart and take things step by step.

A Leap Across the Sea

A Leap Across the Sea & An Electric Spark

Returning home to my family was filled with pure joy, although my heart ached because I couldn't see my father. My mother told me he only returned home once every six months. I missed him terribly, but seeing my brothers and sisters filled me with pride. The greatest blessing was that every single one of them was attending school. That was my ultimate goal, and I bought them all the school supplies and clothes they needed.

Coming Home After Five Years

I am back with the next part of my life.

This is how I started my life in a big city. The woman I lived with was so good to me. She became like a big sister to me. After six months, I started school. It was only half a day, so I could manage both my work and my studies.

She helped me with everything, even cooking. I felt so free with her. I could tell her how I felt, and I never felt afraid to speak. She always treated me with respect. Every month, she gave me my salary, just as she had promised.

Slowly, my dream was coming true.

Abdisa Aga: The Ethiopian Hero Who Took the Fight to Fascist Italy

There are heroes whose names are known around the world, and there are heroes whose stories remain hidden in the pages of history.

Colonel Abdisa Aga was one of those forgotten heroes.

An Ethiopian patriot from Wollega, Abdisa Aga became a soldier when he was still very young. At around fourteen years old, he joined the Ethiopian Army, just as his country was entering one of the darkest periods in its history.

In 1935, Fascist Italy under Benito Mussolini invaded Ethiopia. The following year, Ethiopian forces fought desperately against a much larger and technologically superior Italian army.

Abdisa Aga was among those who resisted.

Hard Labour & A Life-Changing Promise

I started working for this new family, but my life quickly became very hard. They did not let me go outside at all. I was trapped in the house day and night.

Every single day, I had to clean the entire house and wash all the family’s clothes by hand. It was exhausting. Worst of all, they were never happy with me and never appreciated my hard work. Still, I tried my best to make them happy. At night, whenever the baby cried, the mother would wake me up and force me to soothe the baby back to sleep.

A Hard Choice

I slept like a baby. I did not hear anything all night.

When I woke up, it was almost 10 o'clock. No one was in the room. I walked slowly and looked around. The woman had left food on the table for me, so I sat down to eat.

Before I finished, the woman came in. She smiled and said, "Good morning, my daughter! Did you sleep well? Did you eat well?"

Part 5: Running for My Freedom at Thirteen

Part 5: Running for My Freedom at Thirteen

The morning was thick with fog, and the air was still. It was almost six o'clock, and not a single soul was outside.

I crept out of the house slowly, making sure not to make a sound. I couldn't risk my family waking up and seeing me. Once I was clear of the door, I started walking as fast as I could. I had pulled my brother's oversized hoodie over my head so that no one in the village would recognize me if they happened to look out their window.

Part 4: A Spark on the Stairs & A Moment I’ll Never Forget

Part 4: A Spark on the Stairs & A Moment I’ll Never Forget

The morning after that cold evening at the bus stop, I didn't see him. Truthfully, I was feeling so shy that I didn't even know how to face him!

For almost three days, I found myself quietly avoiding him, hiding whenever I thought he might be nearby. My heart was in such a state of confusion and excitement.

Distance, Doubts, and an Unexpected Spar 3

After my vacation ended, I went back home to my normal routine. But even with the distance, he and I talked almost every hour.

We shared everything: "Did you eat?" , "What time do you go to work?" , "Goodnight." We would stay on the phone until I fell asleep. But after a while, the sweet calls began to shift. The questions became different: "Where are you?" , "Why didn't you tell me you were going out?" , "Why didn't you call?" Argument after argument became our new normal.

Reframing Generation Gaps: Raising Kids with Connection & Faith

I have been thinking a lot lately.

This summer, I've had so much quality time to spend with my children. Looking at them, I often reflect on the huge differences between our generation and this new generation.

When we were growing up, we used to talk and spend so much time with our parents. We respected them deeply and helped out wherever needed whether working inside the house or out in the garden. Whatever it was, family came first. I constantly share these memories with my kids so they have a sense of history and know where they come from.

Creating Lasting Habits & Connections

I sometimes catch myself sounding just like my parents, and it brings a smile to my face! But my children truly listen. When I ask them to clean their rooms or help me around the house, they step up. We spend such wonderful time together, and these moments are priceless to me

Sadly, I see so many children today who struggle to listen to their parents. With many parents working long hours, kids are often left with little family time, spending almost all day playing video games and becoming addicted to screens.

In our home, we have a sweet tradition: every evening before bed, we gather to pray. On nights when I am busy, my kids will come to me and say, "Mum, we have to pray! Come on!" It fills my heart with joy to see them lead this tradition, and I pray they pass this same value down to their own children one day.

Being Present as Parents

This is the kind of bond I wish every family could experience. Too often, I see parents living only for themselves, leaving their children with grandparents almost every day. In my view, that isn't fair. Our parents worked so hard to raise us now is their time to rest and relax. I could never ask my mother to look after my kids every single day.

Becoming Our Children's Best Friends

Growing up, there were four of us two girls and two boys. As the eldest, my second-born brother and I were like best friends who shared everything. But the absolute best part of my childhood was that our mother was also our best friend .

That is the greatest gift we can offer our kids today. When we act as their friends rather than just strict authority figures, they won't feel the need to hide anything from us, and we can stay close to their hearts as they grow.

That's what was on my heart for this week! Next time, I will share another life experience.  Thank you so much for reading! Please leave a comment below I would love to read your thoughts. Have a wonderful week!

My Vacation

I was walking on the side of the road it was very dusty and quiet. It was summer in southern Italy, almost six o'clock in the evening. A gentle breeze was in the air as I walked, holding my towel and phone in my hands. I could hear children playing in the distance. Some were building castles on the sand, while others were swimming with their parents.
